“If running on foot has worn you out… are you ready to race the horses?”
The trail doesn’t care about excuses.
The miles don’t negotiate.
And what comes next is always harder than what came before.
This is where endurance is tested.
This is where resolve shows up.
This is where runners decide who they are.
Rodeo Trail Run. Earn every mile.
Located adjacent to the famous Krause Springs in Spicewood, Texas - approximately 30 miles northwest of downtown Austin. Situated along the shores of Lake Travis, this authentic Texas landscape offers the perfect backdrop for a rodeo-themed trail running experience.
Getting There: From Austin: Head west on Highway 71, then north toward Spicewood. The recreation area is located in the Lake Travis region, serving the Westlake/Lake Travis communities.
Full and Half Marathon Course
Main Technical Loop (~5 miles):A rugged trail loop featuring loose and exposed rock, short steep climbs and descents, rolling dirt roads, and uneven footing. The most technical sections are nicknamed "The Bull" - demanding careful foot placement, mental focus, and trail toughness. Aid stations are positioned around the loop.
Backyard Ultra Route: An out-and-back course starting at the main Start/Finish area, running through varied terrain to a remote turnaround point, then returning the same way. This route features a different character than the main loop - expect turns, elevation changes, and the mental challenge of reversing direction on familiar ground.
HALF MARATHON:
2 complete laps of the main technical loop (~10 miles)
1 out-and-back on the Backyard Ultra route
MARATHON:
5 complete laps of the main technical loop
1 final out-and-back to the second aid station to reach marathon distance
RODEO BACKYARD ULTRA
4.17-mile out-and-back repeated every hour on the hour
Finish within 60 minutes to continue to the next lap
Miss the cutoff and you're "bucked from the bull"
Last One Standing wins
WHY MULTI-LAP?Learn the terrain, dial in your pacing, receive consistent crew support at Start/Finish, and embrace the mental challenge of tackling technical sections repeatedly - that's rodeo grit.
TERRAIN: Classic Texas Hill Country - rocky trails, dirt roads, scenic lake views, and plenty of elevation to keep you honest every lap.

The Gladiator Award is the highest honor at our events earned by any athlete who completes 100 miles within 24 hours on the official Backyard Ultra course while following all race rules. Placement does not matter. No rollovers or partial credit.
